Bioartificial kidney covered in SF Chronicle, KQED Forum
The San Francisco Chronicle ran a front-page story Nov. 16 on the implantable, bio-artificial kidney project being led by UCSF bioengineer Shuvo Roy, PhD, an associate professor in the UCSF School of Pharmacy. The article includes quotes from Roy; Tejal Desai, PhD, UCSF professor of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences; and from a UCSF patient. It also details how the device is intended to work, with a filtration section to remove toxins from the blood, alongside a compartment with renal cells to conduct other functions of a normal kidney, such as regulating levels of metabolites. UCSF CEO Mark Laret to Chair National Board for Medical Colleges
Mark R. Laret, chief executive officer of UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, has been elected by his peers as chair of the board of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). His term will run until November 2012. The AAMC represents the interests of 135 U.S. and 17 Canadian accredited medical schools, and nearly 400 major teaching hospitals and health systems, before Congress, federal regulatory agencies, and the executive branch on a wide range of health care issues.

Champion Charities Gives UCSF $2.5 Million
Former NFL players Harris Barton and Ronnie Lott recently presented a check for $2.5 million on behalf of Champion Charities to UCSF's Brain Tumor Research Center to support its mission to eradicate brain disease. The official presentation marked the final payment on Champion Charities' generous pledge to UCSF.

Susan Desmond-Hellmann and Nicholas Hellmann Make Historic Gift to Student Support
UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, and her husband, Nicholas Hellmann, MD, recently made an extraordinary gift to the campus: $1 million for professional student scholarships to be divided four ways between the schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy. The largest donation ever to be received from a past or present UCSF chancellor was motivated by the campus’s new educational fundraising priority.

Innovative Spinal Stapling Leads to Astonishing Outcome for Little Girl
Four-year-old Grace Rego has a straighter spine thanks to two great parents and a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon who performed an innovative spinal stapling procedure at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. The Regos were honored on September 1 with the second annual UCSF Colin Powell Courage Award at the Concert for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.

Celebrating Commencement 2011
In celebration of commencement 2011, UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, congratulates graduates of UCSF, offering them words of advice as they embark on a new chapter in their life.
"For me what commencement means is that the world is going to have an incredibly well trained group of our trainees who are going to make a difference," Desmond-Hellmann says. "Our graduates are setting policy, are changing health sciences, and are making discoveries that change the world and I'm really proud of that. This is a huge contribution that UCSF makes." Desmond-Hellmann delivers her special message in a video now posted on YouTube.
