Gordon Murray Initiative: Improving patient outcomes

As a leader in the field, UCSF can make tremendous headway in surgical research and improve patient survival rates with an intra-operative imaging suite.

Improving Patient Outcomes through Intra-operative Imaging

Immediately performing MRI scans prior to and during surgery enhances the ability to precisely determine tumor location, assures completeness of resection, and helps prevent potential complications.

Intra-operative imaging equipment and technology enables a surgeon to take magnetic resonance (MR) images immediately prior to and/or during a surgical procedure. There are only a handful of medical centers in the world with this capability.

As a leader in the field, UCSF can make tremendous headway in surgical research and improve patient survival rates with an intra-operative imaging suite.

Principal benefits of this advanced technology:

  • Increased likelihood of complete tumor resection, improving patient survival rates
  • Diagnosis of hematomas and other complications before incision closure
  • Superior image quality over older models of intra-operative imaging
  • Avoidance of potential errors due to brain shift (the shifting of brain tissues after the cranial cavity has been surgically opened)

Through the Gordon Murray Initiative, we will offer support for this vital new suite, ensuring the best possible outcomes for surgical patients.
